This is the first time I've eaten here since the new owners took over. My family and I found the food to be superb!

A neighborhood strip mall Chinese restaurant that is under new ownership. It flourished by serving mass quantities of old school Cantonese food to a crowd who likes familiar bland food. If you want Almond Boneless Chicken or Egg Foo Yung, this is your place. Plus you will get ice cream and have leftovers for lunch the next day. If, however, you want flavorful, healthy or interesting food, there are so many better choices within a few miles. The new owners added Thai food to the menu . . . my chicken kra tiem was a disaster.

We have been going here for 30 plus years. After reading the reviews on yelp, I now understand why our food was so horrible the other night. You can definitely tell that there are new owners. While the new owners are much friendlier than the past owners, the food is completely sub-par. Horrible fried rice, Kung pao chicken with slimy chicken and no peanuts. Egg rolls were gross. Never going back. Too bad!

Good Chinese food. Not original owners but they are using original recipes for the dishes I like: Almond Chicken, Egg Foo Young, Pepper Steak all old school good. I don't like the general's sauce too thick and too-sweet, prefer Szechuan Empire @ 14mi & Haggerty. Don't like the sesame chicken, has the same heavy, sweet sauce Won ton soup is the best anywhere. Barbeque pork is yummy. Fried rice is also good. Service is great.

I have only been here once so far. The people were very friendly and I used a coupon so I felt like I was getting a good deal. The food was pretty good but I plan to return and give them another try.

They are under new ownership. The food is not the same. The soups improved, egg rolls are edible but are mall Chinese quality they came out burnt and greasy, cashew chicken was so bland no spice at all we ordered it medium, chicken chop suey was mostly celery. Staff is much nicer than before however service is slower.

You have got to be kidding me!! $36.00 tab for 2 dinners that are average at best, fast food Chinese. By far, it must be the worst value establishment I have ever eaten at!!The owners and management should not be proud of the quality or value!! Save your money, eat at the Chinese place around any corner!!

Only ordered the egg rolls carryout just as a tester. Superb. Fresh and unique shrimp cabbage and unique crispy wrap. I will be back for these alone. Ive tried many egg rolls and these are top notch. These use more cabbagelike inside than bean sprout inside. Plum dipping sauce more pineapplie than orange taste. Tasty. Has a dash of hot mustard in it. Chungs has the best egg rolls but these are damn good.. Forgot to snap pic. Maybe next time. Havent tried other food yet.

Tried to get takeout on Christmas. Knew it would be busy and was willing to wait. Order 3 entrees, told it would take 1 1/2 hours. A bit long, but OK. Showed up when they said it would be ready and found people who had been waiting for nearly 2 hours. Should have left then, but cashier said they were catching up, my order wouldn't be long. After being told 5 more minutes/"you're next" i left after an hour, 2 1/2 hours after ordering, without food. I get that they were slammed but people dining in were being served in 20 minutes. Bad management and dishonesty means they have forever lost a customer. Heard rumors they are under new ownership, doesn't appear to be going well.

I don't really know why this place has such a high rating. I ordered lunch for pick up, I got the almond chicken combo or the #1 as the lady on the phone clarified, as well as egg drop soup. When I got home I definitely did not get what I ordered, instead I had a few pieces of fried chicken with what I imagine was sweet and sour soup. The egg roll tasted incredibly fishy for some reason (way gross), I had a small chicken bone in my fried rice, which tasted what ever even with soy sauce. The egg drop soup was, no joke, neon orange. I'm not overly picky about Chinese food, and I can understand getting an order wrong from time to time. But there was absolutely no redeeming thing in my order. Total waste of money and time. The employees were very nice though. So I guess there's that.

My first sign should have been when I first walked in and a woman was flipping out on the staff. I still got seated since I had been coming here for seven years. This has been my favorite Chinese restaurant at the $10-$15 price point. After being seated it took about 10 minutes for someone to notice. I didn't get offered a drink, just asked if I was ready. I ordered my usual and tried ordering a beer. This is when I found out the restaurant was under new ownership since the liquor license had not transferred yet. When the food came out it went further downhill. The soup was ok. The egg roll had an odd taste I could not quite put my finger on. The fried rice was burnt. The chicken subgum chop suey was reminiscent of the time I had attempted the dish from scratch myself. (That didn't go well either). To cap off the evening I opened my fortune cookie only to find I had no fortune. I have to find a new Chinese food place now.

Under new ownership. Food is not same quality. I have tried gai kow and cashew chicken with the new ownership. Gai kow seemed to be prepared with a lot of salt used for flavor, And the cashew chicken which was ordered medium spicy was very bland. The eggrolls are different as well, can't say exactly what is different besides the flavor. Something is very noticeably missing from the egg roll. What used to be superb is now very generic. The only positive thing to say about the new ownership is the very unfriendly woman who was there for many years is not!i'm very disappointed that my favorite Chinese restaurant is no longer my favorite. And I have been a customer as long as they have been at Maple and Orchard Lake Road. Back when they were at telegraph and maple-and that's a very long time ago!

We've been going to golden Phoenix for over 20 years now. The new ownership seems to be doing an awesome job. The interior is extremely outdated but the food and service more than makes up for it. Best silver needle noodles I've ever had, love the shrimp eggrolls and dinner rolls to name just a few of my favorites. Fun knick knacks and fountain at the front for the kids! Not badly priced!!!

We got a carryout order from this restaurant last night, our first time trying their food. I'm a fan of hot and sour soup, trying it nearly every time I pass a new Chinese restaurant. Theirs consisted of a watery broth with few other ingredients, unlike the typical version with a richly flavored broth, slightly thickened and filled with meat, tofu, bamboo shoots and other Chinese vegetables. The mu shoo pork would have been good if the meat wasn't so tough and fatty. The chicken lo Mein was the best dish we ordered, but not good enough to get us back. Kung pao chicken was bland, seemed more stewed than freshly prepared. The chicken was not well trimmed and had some nasty pieces that I spit out. Normally I wouldn't negatively comment after only one visit, but I won't return to this one. There are too many other good choices within a mile or two from Golden Phoenix.

The Golden Phoenix is in a strip mall just kiddie corner from The Outback restaurant. The parking lot is quite large, but of course this parking lot is also for other shoppers. Once entering the Golden Phoenix it appears a little outdated. The restaurant is on the smaller side and the tables are almost on top of each other. The servers - some can talk English, but others I don't know if they understand or not! The GP has 2 tables that accommodate 5 - 6 people, all others 2 - 4 people. So, if you are a large group you may want to go over to Shangri-La which is at the left or right depending on which way you are facing of GP in the mall and has an extra large room for groups. The food is good, large portions. Usually I go with 4 other friends and for 5 of us we order 4 entrees. This is enough for us and usually one person has a meal left-over to take home. The egg rolls are good, soup - I don't know, usually I don't have this, and the entrees are good, not exceptional, but good! My friends love the Peppermint Ice Cream and the Butter Pecan ice cream. They also bring over fortune cookies which have lame sayings inside - they should rename these cookies to Chinese sayings or something cookies. All-in-all I will more than likely go back with my friends due to it being in the middle!!!!

I have gone here since I was 4 years old along with everyone in my family and we have yet to have a problem with this place. The owner is really nice once you get to know them and the food is great when really it's something popular like almond boneless chicken or Mongolian beef or the general sous chicken and the egg rolls and the wonton soup are very good but be careful they do put shrimp in there egg rolls . We have also ordered from this place on Christmas and yes it is chaos but they get it done .

Took motherinlaw for her birthday lunch. She enjoyed the restaurant before the new owners took over. I have been vegetarian for 30 years and have had traditional meat dishes substituted with tofu. I ordered general tso combo and asked for veg. soup, spring roll, and veg. fried rice . This request for vegetarians is not unusual...The waitress said ok about the tofu instead of chicken, and pushed for me to get white rice instead of the veg fried rice which she said would charge me $2.00 more ..I decided on the white rice and was able to get a veg spring roll instead of meat. The egg drop soup was salty..but edible. When she served my meal, the plate had unusually large blocks of tofu with a sauce over it that looked like soy sauce. General tso chicken is served with a lighter brown to orange color sauce and with broccoli. I asked the waitress wheres the broccoli? She replied you dont get broccoli when you order lunch...only at dinner! I was so taken aback with that response! I said you mean you alter the dish at lunch time only? She left and I reluctantly took a bite. The only way to describe the taste would be compared to a spoiled soy sauce. I put my plate aside and when the waitress returned she asked me whats wrong? I said I didnt care for it, and she went into her rant you dont get broccoli at lunch time and look at the dinner price...I said lunch portions are smaller, and I never have been to any Chinese restaurant where they take out an ingredient and put it back in for dinner time because it cost more. She continued tp talk in her language to the manager who said the same thing and I as a customer should know this! Furthermore the waitress came back and told me she did me a favor for my veg.options., and she was charging me for the soup but not for the dish. I can only imagine for meat eaters the quality of chicken or beef they serve. Heres the line that really got me...she said you only get 5 pieces of broccoli at dinner time! So i said you cant put in half that amount for lunch time? Beware of this place...if broccoli is a premium commodity, what is the quality of the meats they give you at lunch time or dinner time? Cant post without giving 1 star...wouldnt give any!

Old school Chinese-American. When I say old school, I mean both the food and the decor. Dinner entrees come with a ridiculous amount of food. First, they set down fried wonton strips with two dipping sauces. Then you get your choice of soup. After that, you get an egg or spring roll. And not just an egg roll, but an egg roll as thick as your forearm. Then you get your entree. With your entree, for no apparent reason, comes a large yeast roll more commonly found in homestyle/southern restaurants. After dinner comes a scoop of ice cream (I recommend the peppermint), and finally, with your check, comes the fortune cookies. As for the food, the hot and sour soup was very good. The egg roll was dry and tasted a little odd. The vegetables in our entrees (Hunan Chicken and Green Beans with Black Bean Sauce) were a bit overcooked, and the sauces were a little on the thick and greasy side. The Ginger Beef had a nice, strong ginger taste, but the beef had a weird texture to it. The yeast rolls, however, were delicious. If you're looking for a lot of food, you will be happy here. Otherwise, I think you can find slightly better Chinese-American food in this neighborhood.

I just stopped into the Golden Phoenix for a quick lunch break. I usually got the Mongolian beef combo at most Chinese places I go to so I decided to give it a try here. Bad idea, it was nothing like Mongolian beef is supposed to be at all. I'm not just comparing it to one or two other Chinese restaurants; I have tried many different places in my lifetime ordering the same thing and for the most part it's made the same way. This stuff tasted like something you would feed a dog and it was mushy and soft. Reminded me of roast from a crock pot. The egg roll was good, but the fried rice was the worst I have had in a while. It was very salty and tasteless. Needless to say, if this dish was prepared anything like the rest, don't go here. Not worth it. Go to Shangri La next door instead, they have the best Chinese/ Cantonese/ Mandarin food in Michigan.

Have ordered take out and eaten in. First, the eat-in experience. Restaurant is a little run-down, nothing you can put your finger on and not bad, but definitely a little dated. Ordered the sesame chicken ($14.95). Comes with soup, egg roll or spring roll, hot tea, and dessert. Was told the wontons in the wonton soup have chicken in them. Companion asked what kind of meat was in the egg roll and was told chicken. When egg roll arrived and was cut open, tiny shrimp poured out. Showed waitress and she just said, "Yeah, shrimp and chicken". No offer to provide a replacement vegetarian spring roll. Odd. Sesame chicken was okay - nice quality white meat, but the flavor wasn't to my personal liking. Companion enjoyed the chicken with pea pods and mushrooms which is why this is 3* and not 2. Steamed rice came with the meal too even though menu didn't mention. Good. Dessert was ice cream - I would say the peppermint is actually candy cane ice with sugar chunks in. Good. Other than egg roll incident, waitress was very helpful and personable. Bathroom smelled like a pool locker room. Ordered carryout. Food slightly better. Only $9 for most chicken items on carryout - in other words, $5 cheaper for not getting the soup, egg roll, etc. Chicken Fried Rice was good.

Awful, bland food. The Olive Garden of Chinese food. So many great Chinese restaurants in the area it's hard to understand why anyone would eat here. The owner is extremely rude. My last visit was a carry out for a friend that had surgery and specifically asked that I order from Golden Phoenix. I asked for extra hot pepper and was charged. Worth it to at least have some flavour. Shangri La is right down the street and a much better choice.

Every time i give the Golden Phoenix another try i am constantly let down. We ordered chicken low main and almond boneless chicken which was just ok. The problem was they must of ran out of cartons so they packaged it up and wrapped the order in bags so the sauce was spilling out all over the place. My car seat had sauce on the seat. Yuck!! When i opened my chicken low main it was filled with only low main and very little chicken. Wheres all the chicken? One of the main reasons why i order from here is because i love their hot fresh sweet bread rolls and sizzling rice soup. I could just eat that for a meal. The wait staff has worked there for years and i feel its time for them to retire because they move so slow. I ate here over the summer with my mom and desert came with our meal. Our waiter literally gave us 1 table spoon of ice cream each. We laughed so hard my stomach was hurting. The owner of the restaurant heard us laughing and was nervous we were going to make a scene in front of the other customers so he gave us more ice cream.

Golden Phoenix has the best Egg Drop Soup, super crispy egg rolls, and very tasty steamed rice! I strayed from my usual (Sweet & Sour Chicken) and ordered the Garlic Eggplant... I thought it was bland and uninteresting. Perhaps you might like it but I certainly don't recommend it. They had Peppermint Ice Cream for dessert which was delicious and made me forget the Eggplant. I still love the Golden Phoenix and will be back.

We had dinner here, big mistake! It took forever to be greated by the waitress, we soon discovered the reason, she was taking on her cel phone while waiting tables! Our wonton soups came out room temperature and the wontons were falling apart from being so overcooked. Our garlic beef was 3/4 green beans, all the description said was garlic beef, not green beans with a few pieces of beef. All the portions are small for the price, the food was room temperature, and loaded with MSG. Never again!

I have been coming to this restaurant for at least 2 decades. I used to go there when it was originally on maple and telegraph where the BMW dealership is. Here is the bottom line as to why I WONT go here anymore. Ever since they changed ownership years ago, the business started a steady DECLINE in every facet of a restaurant. The food was becoming less and less edible and of diminishing quality, the service was getting slower and more tired, the decor and ambience began a lifeless and outdated decline, but most importantly the new owners became a disaster. They are very rude and arrogant and are cutting every corner they can. I cant trust that the food im eating is what they say it is anymore. When i tried to complain, they were very defensive, rude and I actually got into a shouting match with them. I miss the old owner, she was a kind and friendly lady who always came and spoke with us for every meal we had. she loved her customers. The multi-decade streak is over and I need to lose weight anyways! They don't get 1 star because thats just too brutal. Oh and btw, my favorite soup the sizzling rice soup, used to have recognizable pieces of meat, now it looks and tastes like gray colored spam. beware!

Multi-course meals, delicious food, good waiter service, and the hostess was calm and collected on a very busy night. The decor needs some help, but the great food keeps your attention away from the decor. Best broccoli beef I've ever had.

I will not return. I had sweet and sour chicken which was tough and the waitress didn't ask how much spice my son wanted on his sezchuan beef and the chef put none on it at all. He found it tasteless. And serving black tea instead of green tea was not to our liking either. The only thing we actually liked was the peppermint ice cream which wasn't home made.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
